As I mentioned last week, we're doing some work on Mountain Highway over a couple of months. During this time there will be lanes closed and poor road surface. While bikes are free to ride there if they want, we want to advise them about the poor surface before they get there. If you could assist in any way by sending out the message below to members, clubs, associations and any other contacts you have, that would be great.
We're also putting up signs at the Basin and Sassafras warning riders the surface may not be suitable.
I also followed up on the road surface aspect for you and the reply was that we're not touching the surface, except on two bends. I'm told that on those two bends we're using '30mm Type HP asphalt'. The team leader assures me that it's not a rough surface, but will prevent slipping along the curve.
Anyway, here is the message we need to get out there:
VicRoads wishes to advise that two road safety projects will take place along Mountain Highway (Wantirna-Sassafras Road) in the coming months. The projects involve: · Road safety improvements along Mountain Highway between Forest Road, The Basin and Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, Sassafras. Includes works on the shoulder and guard rail. The project will begin in mid-March and is expected to finish in August this year.
· Rehabilitation of a land slip on Mountain Highway between Inverness Avenue and Claremont Avenue, The Basin. The project is expected to begin in early March and finish in June this year.
Delays should be expected as a result of both projects.
Traffic Management Arrangements
Lane closures and reduced speed limits will be required at work sites during weekdays. Weekend lane closures are not expected, however the speed may still be lower and road users should take care regardless of the day. Delays are expected and people should take this into account when planning their journey. Cyclists should be aware that during construction that the road surface may be unsuitable to ride. VicRoads would like to thank all road users for their patience and understanding during these works.
More information
For more information on either project please email mseprojects@roads.vic.gov.au As this road is a popular route for cyclists we would appreciate if you could pass it on to your contacts.
