Last week this arrived for me from Italy and straight out of 1971, seriously. Took it for a ride on the weekend and was completely amazed at how plush the ride was, pure magic carpet ride stuff, I really understand now the love for old bikes and why so many people bang on about em all the time - converted.
Pass the tissues. Better then your porn Spanglish!
ReplyDeleteParden my tardy response but I was compelled to smoke a cigarette after going over these pictures knowing that a BBTT member has it.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it better?
ReplyDeleteNice colour too, we will have to have a STEEL IS REAL ride, which will thankfully exclude some of the brand victims.
@Spanglish, probably not better, just different, I guess I was expecting it to be a harsh ride, you know, being used to all the hype around carbon deadening road vibration etc, etc. But this was just smooooooth, probably the old tubulars, basic wheels and the heavy frame helping to ride out the bumps. Hell of a saddle though, leather over hard plastic. STEEL IS REAL ride! I am in.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, unusual for Radar to get all schoolyard squeely...not. Looks cool, don't know about the tubulars but the frame certainly will iron out the parts other roads reach. Dan rides a Hillman, Sleepy a Merckx or two and Cipo has a nice 'sleeper' in the broom cupboard which he should restore.
ReplyDeleteYep, that saddle looks a bit hardcore, speak to Sleepy if you need any tips on where to get bits.
How did it just appear mysteriously from Italy?
Squeely, must be an English term?
ReplyDeleteIf its from 71, were clinchers a common thing back then? Stick w the tubulars.
Yeah Spanglish it wasn't that mysterious, like a body rolled up and stuffed in the back seat, it was more that I had heard some bad stories about purchases made out of Italy from ebay and so was pleasantly surprised when it turned up. Particularly as the sender's english meant that I wasn't sure whether he is understood Australia from Austria.
ReplyDeleteThe story goes the owner lived near the Pinarello factory is a friend of Giovanni and sourced this direct... anyway nice story, but great ride.
I suspect the spokes need some tightening at the moment, which is contributing to the soft ride, will fix tonight and advise.
best get the cocaine out of the tubes doode, before the pigs turn up!
ReplyDeletewe all want to know how much you paid for it too. Plus you better update what's in your bike stable so all those saddo's in a monogamous bike relationship can see how the other half lives :-)
ReplyDeleteGood call Spanglish. This wasn't a cheap purchase, $750 plus postage, but I reckon worth every cent. Recently sold three bikes (a BMC ProMachine, Wilier Le Roi Cunego Edition and a Kestrel Talon SL TT) so the apartment is looking a little bare, there are only 6 bikes taking up space. Including my new Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL3 (photos in new blog), BMC ProMachine (yes another one, the same colour scheme as Joker's), BMC SL01, Orbea MTB, Giant MTB and the Pinarello. Do I win any prizes?
ReplyDeleteYes, you get the BBTT TopGear award when Sleepy releases his 'garage' info.$750 is not that much, plain jane steel bike in the shop would be that with no romance or history.
ReplyDeleteBMC SL01 aluminium/carbon racer? Are you doing any racing?
Why sell one ProMachine and buy another? Can't believe you sold the Willier... must be some kinda law against that!
What size bikes are these, and did you offer them around?
Ok, I am going to admit that I didn't offer the bikes around before selling to some random people on ebay, my bad and I will cop the fine. The Promachine was a 56cm TT, the Wilier a 55.5 and the Kestrel a 57. For sure they will go up here first in the future. The pressure was on from the wife to minimise the amount of bikes in the house.
ReplyDeleteThe new Promachine is actually my wifes', the previous one was mine, bloody good bike.
Oh, can I confirm this:
ReplyDeleteyour wife (thats a girl) has the same colour bike as The Joker (thats a boy)
Please make it so, I see endless milage in this one...
Yes, my wife (a girl) has the exact same colour bike as the Joker, she picked it as she thought it was 'cute' and loves it. I will post a picture shortly.
